We can build a great deck out of either, but it’s good to know the facts before you choose which material you want for your deck.
Basic pressure treated lumber is still the most popular decking material, because it is the most affordable and widely available option. It accounts for roughly 75% of decks built today. Some downsides to PT wood decking are that it is susceptible to changing dimension, and “warping”. It also generally requires the most maintenance.
That being said, pressure treated treated wood is designed for long-term performance in Alberta’s outdoor applications, and still presents a very solid choice for your outdoor deck. We also use high quality corrosion-resistant nails or, screws for longer life. The preservative used on pressure treated lumber, resists the wood against fungal and insect decay, as well as moisture from exposure to provide maximum protection.
More exotic lumbers, like Redwood, Cedar, and Tropical Hardwoods can be a beautiful alternative, and can circumvent many of the durability and maintenance concerns that come with pressure treated lumber.
Composite decking has become extremely popular thanks to its durability and low maintenance requirements. It is still very affordable, and some believe it to present a better value in the long run since it’s unlikely to warp or split on you.

Vinyl decking (or PVC decking) has also increased in popularity in recent years, and can provide a completely waterproof and virtually maintenance-free deck.
